geometric mean put equal weight in all variables. multiply them and sqrt by number of variables. not affected by high ranges so good

average annual return base on the principle plus the interest earned the previous year.
So we would take the geometric mean.

numbers are not independent of each other. If you lose a substantial amount of money in a particular year, you have that much less capital to invest and generate returns in the following years.
